River Rock, Tejas Gravel & Steel Edging Beds in McKinney, TX
The clean, modern look that has replaced mulch in a lot of Collin County front yards: black Tejas gravel or river rock in crisp steel-edged beds with a few well-chosen plants.

Rock beds are our most requested project. Done right they look sharp for years and cut the spring mulch bill to zero; done wrong they sprout weeds and spill onto the lawn. The difference is the prep — weed barrier, a proper edge and the right depth of stone.
Materials we install
- Tejas black gravel (5/8 in or 2 in) — the modern favourite for new builds and white or grey brick.
- River rock (1½ in) — natural tones that suit red brick and older neighbourhoods; we have moved 70,000 lb of it on a single project.
- Decomposed granite and pea gravel — for paths, joints and planter surrounds.
- Chop stone and Oklahoma stone — raised borders and low walls.
- 4-inch steel edging in black or natural — the crisp line between bed and lawn.
Where it works
Front foundation beds, tree rings, side yards that never grow grass, the strip between the drive and the fence, and anywhere your HOA keeps sending letters about weeds. Ask about our Kevin & Sally and Trotter projects on the projects page.
Questions about rock & edging
Will rock beds get too hot for the plants?
Dark gravel does warm up, so we pair it with heat-tolerant plants — agave, yucca, sago, hollies, ornamental grasses — and keep mulch rings where a tree or shrub needs cooler roots.
Do I still get weeds?
Far fewer. Weed barrier plus the right depth of stone stops most of them; the odd wind-blown seed pulls out easily from gravel.
Can you remove my old mulch first?
Yes — we strip the old mulch and any failed plants, haul them away and start clean.
